SRI ARA FOOD & FUNFAIR AND JUMBLE SALE

Dear Parents

The coupons for the upcoming fund raising event on Saturday, 14 April are now ready, and we are distributing them to students, teachers and staff. Each person will be given 10 booklets, valued at RM100.00. More are available upon request from the administrative office. This is for safe and easy collection of funds.

We hope all parents will help their children in their effort to raise funds for the school – help them to sell the coupons, or volunteer to put one of our posters on your condo notice-board to advertise the event.

All the pupils and staff are working very hard to make this event successful, but we need your assistance. Please help the students, your children, in any way you can.

The day will be a replacement day for the school so attendance is compulsory. Students will have to be in school by 8 am and go home at 3 pm.

Dear Parents,

FIRST TERM BREAK

The first term break will begin next week 12 March. We hope that students will use this time wisely to look into their studies.

FUND RAISER / YOUNG ENTERPRENUER’S DAY

There will be a fund raiser next term on Saturday, 14th April here at the school grounds. The idea was mooted last year by the teachers and is aimed at encouraging our students to take part in raising funds as an ongoing project. Part of the funds will go to a charitable fund that the SRC normally will contribute to at the end of the year.

Some of the parents have offered to chip in and help, we are happy to say through the Sri Ara Schools Parent Group.

The SASP have a dedicated e-mail at saspgroup[at]gmail.com. Please contact them and support our project and make this a success.

Further information on the event will be disseminated after the holidays.

Sri Ara Schools Dinner & Concert

Presents
Unity in Diversity
By the Students of Sri Ara

Dear Parents & Students of Sri Ara Schools,

Yet another year has just flown by and it seems at lightning speed! We can hardly stop to take a breather and before we know it is time for the Annual Dinner Concert once again and for me to sum up the year.

The year, 2011 has had its fair share of ups and downs. The “ups” were endorsement of the Sri Ara International School by the MOE and good results from last year’s 2010 Form Five students, Shamine Iznina and Year 11 students, Pretasheeny who scored a distinction in Accounting whilst Shamine had distinctions in Mathematics, Bahasa Melayu and English.

This has been followed by Distinctions from Thulasie of Form 3 and Saki of Year 6 for the English Assessment from University of New South Wales.

Once again, our students have scored distinctions in the practical papers for Art at the National O-Leval equivalent or SPM for 2011.

Congratulations to students and well done teachers!

To cap this, the approval and certification by Cambridge International Examinations to become a CIE school and carry the logo, is definitely a feather in our cap.

Our school is always packed with events and it is never mundane. From the beginning of the year right to the very end, activities are planned around the academic timetable. Once the exams are scheduled, we pack the rest of the year with events to ensure we live up to our goal,

Developing Leaders Each One At A Time.

Our Philosophy has always been and still is that the students from Sri Ara Schools should be well-rounded students. Each student is like a diamond in the rough.

“To Be A Face in the Crowd or To Be the One the Crowd Faces”

screamed at me from a billboard advertised by another school in another country not too far away. It struck me that this IS the type of student we produce! And it is our underlying philosophy of work hard and play hard that works wonders with our students.

Besides developing their academic abilities, we always strive to ensure that students develop leadership by learning to take charge of their lives and develop the confidence they will need to carry them into their future. Throughout the year both teachers and students work hard at academic studies, developing social skills all the while.

As they go through the school they learn responsibility, develop creativity, planning and organizational skills, respect for others, teamwork, and how to balance their lives. These skills are needed more and more today than ever before.

They are not learnt from books but by taking active part in all the activities planned throughout our calendar. Our programme is designed to encourage both left and right brain development bringing out the ability of the individual to think laterally, out of the box problem solving and to know right from wrong.

It never fails to fill me with pride when I see once “naughty” students become top scorers, or once shy students stand up to say a few words in front of an audience, act out a part, sing a song or perform a dance as it takes not ony the practice but courage and confidence to do so.

This year has not been any different with the Annual Motivation Camp, National Day Celebrations, Telematch Day, Primary and Students Representative Council Trips, being the main activities. In addition to these this year, there was the Fund Raising for the Japanese Tsunami Victims. Our students raised just over RM7,000/ – that was handed over to the Johor Branch of the Red Crescent.

Sri Ara students went all out and three groups entered the Dance Contest. I am pleased to say one of our teams made us proud when they were awarded with the Best Dance Concept!

Still on the spirit of caring and giving, traditionally over the years Sri Ara students through the Student Representative Council have contributed to various charitable organizations paying a visit to a selected group every year. This year the students will be visiting Pusat Kebajikan Orang Istimewa in Kempas. The organization is a home for the abandoned ranging in age from 20 to 50. Our students will bring groceries and some songs to lift their spirits a little.

At this time, the biggest and most heart wrenching “down” is having to say goodbye. This year it is especially hard as we say goodbye to the batch of students we have not just taught but nurtured over the years. They comprise Mohamed, Suhali and Khalifa who have already left for Dubai and those who are currently sitting for major exams in the form of the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia and the International General Certificate of School Examination O-Level Papers, Form V and Year 11.

On behalf of all the team I would like to bid farewell and wish all the best in the future to Alia (joined in Primary One), Mohd Syakir (joined in Primary Two), Long Shang (Primary Four), Hajar (Primary Six), Yee Tene (Form One), Len, Hana, Sina (Form Four and Year Ten) and finally Khadija and Harris who joined at the start of this year. Also to Aaron who returns to the Philipines to go on for further studies.

Every teacher I have spoken to has expressed their sadness at the thought of saying goodbye to you all!

During your time with the school you have each developed your individual strengths. You are confident, creative, courteous, caring and compassionate. These are the 5 ‘C’s or carats of Sri Ara Students and I am confident they will carry you, like the students before you and those that will follow, well into your future lives.

Like the Ara or Banyan tree that grows from a weed into a massive strong Banyan tree, never forget you are part of a big ever growing “family / community” that of the Ara Tree. Always carry the Ara name with pride wherever you go!

I am sure you will join me to thank the team of staff and teachers both full and part-time, for the hard work put in over the year. The camaraderie always gets better and better!

Last but not least, I take this opportunity to thank each and every one of the students, parents, families and friends for their support and effort toward making our school and its family / community spirit strong!

Yours sincerely

Dear Parents & Students,

Public Holiday

Please note that Monday, 1 August is a public holiday. There will be no ECAs for the month of August with effect from Tuesday, 2 August. We will notify you before the ECAs are to resume. Please arrange for your transporters to pick up your children early as the office will be closed by 4pm at the latest for the month of August.

School Security Regulations

In the light of recent developments both at the school and in other parts of Johor State – most specifically the dreadful hostage situation that occurred in a school in Muar – the staff and management of Sri Ara schools have recently conducted a review of our safety and security procedures.

Everyone at Sri Ara is proud of its reputation and our ability to run a fairly relaxed establishment. At the same time however, we cannot afford to ignore events taking place in the real world. The safety of our students is always at the forefront of the mind of every staff member, and we cannot take chances in this respect.

As a result of our review, we will be tightening security, introducing changes in several phases.

We are asking for the support of all parents and friends of the school in implementing these changes.

We do appreciate that these developments may cause some parents a small degree of inconvenience, but given that we are doing this to make sure that your children remain safe whilst they are in school, we are hopeful that we can count on your support.

The first tranche of changes will be implemented with effect from (and including) Monday, 8 August 2011.

Between 8.00am and 8.15am, there will be a 15 minute period of ‘grace’ where access to the school will be free as it is now. After 8.15am however, the new rules will be applied and the gate will be locked.

Similarly, from Monday to Thursday, the school gates will open from 3.00pm. If however your child is participating in an ECA, please arrive no earlier than 15 minutes before they are due to finish in an effort to keep possible congestion to a minimum.

On Fridays, the gates will open at 2.45pm as school ends at 3.00pm.

At all other times, every visitor to the school must enter through the front gate only. Access to the school from any other point of entry for anyone except teachers, students and other recognized staff members is strictly prohibited.

All visitors must report to the guardhouse and collect a security pass.

Visitors must report to the guardhouse and collect a security pass.

Visitors must also collect a security form from the guard house which is to be taken to the school office where it will be countersigned by a member of staff. It is no longer permissible for anyone to go straight to a classroom or anywhere else on the school premises without seeking permission from a member of the school staff in advance.

The pass that is issued must be visible at all times when a visitor is on the school premises during normal school hours, excepting the 15 minute ‘grace’ period previously stipulated.

These rules apply to both break and lunchtime and they apply to everyone who is not a member of the staff or a student at the school.

Given that we are doing this for the benefit of your children, we hope that we can count on 100% of your support to make Sri Ara schools a safer and more secure school.

Exclusive Premiere Invitation To ‘Cars 2′

Soroptimist International is a UN supported charitable foundation that funds and runs two schools for refugees in Johor. They are planning a series of fund raising events over the next few months and have asked us to help.

As part of the fund raising efforts, there is an exclusive premiere of the latest Disney Pixar movie ‘Cars 2′, the sequel to the smash hit ‘Cars’ on 20 August. The movie does not go on general release until 25 August, but we’ve a limited number of tickets for the premiere hosted by the Cineleisure complex in City Square.

The tickets are RM35 per person, with proceeds used to help fund the continuing education of 120 refugee children here in Johor.

We would love to see as many students and parents at the premiere.

Cash and clothing for Japan Earthquake & Tsunami victims…

Following the event for the victims of the Japanese Earthquake & Tsunami last weekend, we’re delighted to announce on behalf of the Student Representative Council that we managed to raise more than RM7000 on the day.

We also collected several hundred items of warm clothing that we are trying to send directly to the disaster victims.

The harrowing images that are still coming out of Japan make it obvious that clothing for people who lost everything is still a priority, so collecting and sorting the clothes represents another superb effort by everyone concerned.

All in all, a brilliant result from an event arranged at such short notice.

Well done to all students, teachers and parents who played such a massive and vital role in making the day so successful.

We should also say a huge ‘Thank you’ to all of our generous sponsors and benefactors too, because without them, staging the event would have been impossible.

We have made arrangements to pass the money and clothing to the Red Crescent who will in turn pass them on to the International Red Cross for distribution in Japan.

We hope that a small cheque-giving ceremony can be arranged at the school early next week. Watch this space for additional details… * We were in the newspaper! New Straits Times, Monday, 25th April

Ara Schools – Food & Fun Fair / Jumble Sale for Japanese Earthquake & Tsunami Victims

Dear Parents & Students

JAPANESE DISASTER FUND

We are very pleased and proud that the students of the school have, from the smallest to the biggest, exhibited compassion for those struck by the disaster and devastation that hit Japan recently. The Students have come up with marvellous ideas to help and we would like to do our best to encourage their compassion and desire to come to the aid of others in times of such despair.

As mentioned in our earlier newsletter, the Sri Ara Students (“Araians”) through “Mufti Week” have raised just over RM600/-.

The main event, however for the charity drive for the Japan Disaster Fund will be the Food, Fun Fair and Jumble Sale, this Saturday, 9th April.

We are very positive of a very healthy turnout as several hundred ‘flyers’ have been distributed and posters posted in condominiums, restaurants, cafeterias, clinics, petrol stations and shops. Your help as the supportive and proud parents you all are would be very much appreciated!

We urgently need parents and students to help us make this event successful. We really need :-

  • Donations of clothes, books, toys or anything else you have lying around that you do not need that we can sell. It will not be much of a sale if there is nothing to buy or sell! Cash donations also, would be more than welcome!
  • Volunteer parents who can help in running some of the events on the day. Please advise the school office about your availability as soon as possible.

Please also note the following :-

Coupons

For safe and easy collection of funds, coupons will be issued for this event and sold on site. If you would like to pre-book these please call the office or send Steve Cowan a note by Friday morning.

Tax Exemption for Contributors

All contributions to this charity will be exempted from tax as arrangements have been made for proceeds to be handed to the Malaysian Red Crescent’s Johor Branch and they have assured me that these will then be given directly to the International Red Cross Association, one of the few Associations recognised by the Japanese Government to handle donations for this cause.

Yours truly,

Nooraini Mohd Yasin
